Why our community is saying NO.
If the proposed sand mine is approved by the Cairns Regional Council, the Kamerunga / Freshwater / Redlynch region will be subjected to approximately 20 years of mining practices. Residents & community members have the opinion that the mine will impact because:
- The development is planned too close to rural and residential properties.
- "Californian studies show dust plumes travel over 750 metres from (sand) mining sites". ref
- Hazardous dust could affect Kamerunga / Freshwater / Redlynch residents' health - not to mention the extra dust build up that could occur in homes.
- "Sandmining produces fine silica dust that contains 'crystalline silica' - a class one carcinogen which causes cancer and silicosis, an incurable disease." ref
- Local property values will likely depreciate*.
- The proposed site is 150 metres from the Freshwater Creek, positioned on a flood plane and poses a risk to local flora and fauna.
- The area will loose its ambience and some properties will have their scenic views devastated.
- There is a school less than 500 metres from the proposed site - Dust can affect the students' health and the increased traffic will affect road safety in the area.
- Trucks will use public roads hundreds of times per week, after passing by local homes and a school.
- The mine site is visible from the train routes, walking & horse trails and degrades the aesthetic value of the region.
- Empty sand mines are often turned into landfills that are filled back up with rubbish.
- Community members are concerned about contamination of bore water.

*Although the depreciation of property will impact the community greatly the council does not recognise this reason as grounds for objection.
